Cheraw Is A Historic Treasure Loaded With Opportunities
The original inhabitants of this area were the Cheraw and Pee Dee Indian tribes. The
Cheraw lived
closest to the modern village site, but by the 1730s they
had been devastated by disease. Around the late 1730s,
European settlers began to travel up the river and establish
homes within the future limits of the town. |

|
Cheraw was officially established by 1750, and a growing river trade kept it a busy center of commerce for decades to come. Prior to the American Revolution, it was one of only 6 cities in South Carolina listed on English maps. After the Revolution,
Cheraw
continued to grow more
prosperous, with a formal network of
streets laid out in the early part
of the 19th century.
Average high temperatures in
Cheraw
get up to 91 degrees Fahrenheit in
the summer, and the average lows
fall to 34 degrees during winter.
Monthly precipitation averages
nearly 4 inches. The annual snowfall
average is 4.4 inches. |
